Jesus and his disciples withdraw to rest, but a crowd finds them before they can get away. Mark describes the people as “sheep without a shepherd.” Jesus sees their need and is moved with deep compassion. Instead of turning them away, he begins to teach them.

Jesus’ example invites us to ask what it means to follow him when serving others asks something of us. When was the last time following Jesus cost you something?
