When King Herod heard about Jesus and the miraculous signs He performed, he did not recognize the Son of God. Instead, he saw John the Baptist—the man he had beheaded for confronting his unlawful marriage to Herodias. Burdened by the shame of his sin, Herod mistook Jesus for John raised from the dead.
Herod’s guilt distorted his vision. Though the signs pointed toward salvation, his past prevented him from seeing Jesus for who He truly was.
Are we guilty of doing the same? When we confess our sins, can we receive God’s forgiveness and release the shame we continue to carry? Or will we allow our past to weigh us down, distort our view of Jesus, and keep us trapped in guilt?
Through Christ, forgiveness and freedom are available. The question is whether we will receive them.
