Jesus VS State

Jesus frees the demon possessed man.

The story of Jesus casting the "Legion" of demons out of a possessed man is far more than a dramatic miracle—it's a direct confrontation between the Kingdom of God and the kingdoms of this world.

Why does Mark use the word Legion? Why does Jesus perform this miracle in the Decapolis, a region shaped by Roman influence? And why do the demons enter a herd of pigs?

When we slow down and pay attention to the details, a startling picture emerges. Mark isn't simply telling us about one man's deliverance—he's contrasting Jesus with the Roman Empire. Where empires see people as expendable tools for power and prosperity, Jesus sees every person as bearing the image of God. Where empire strips away identity and reduces individuals to numbers within a "legion," Jesus restores names, dignity, and community.

Jesus crossed a stormy sea, faced chaos, and entered enemy territory—not to address a crowd, but to rescue one broken man.

This sermon explores the radical implications of that story and asks what it means for us today. If Jesus' Kingdom operates differently than every earthly empire, what does that say about power, politics, community, and the value of a single human life?

No matter how broken, forgotten, or overwhelmed you feel, this passage reminds us that Jesus will cross any sea to set one person free.
