Esther 8

Scripture

1 On that day did the king Ahasuerus give the house of Haman the Jews’ enemy unto Esther the queen. And Mordecai came before the king; for Esther had told what he was unto her. 2 And the king took off his ring, which he had taken from Haman, and gave it unto Mordecai. And Esther set Mordecai over the house of Haman.

3 And Esther spake yet again before the king, and fell down at his feet, and besought him with tears to put away the mischief of Haman the Agagite, and his device that he had devised against the Jews. 4 Then the king held out to Esther the golden sceptre. So Esther arose, and stood before the king. 5 And she said, If it please the king, and if I have found favor in his sight, and the thing seem right before the king, and I be pleasing in his eyes, let it be written to reverse the letters devised by Haman, the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, which he wrote to destroy the Jews that are in all the king’s provinces: 6 for how can I endure to see the evil that shall come unto my people? or how can I endure to see the destruction of my kindred? 7 Then the king Ahasuerus said unto Esther the queen and to Mordecai the Jew, Behold, I have given Esther the house of Haman, and him they have hanged upon the gallows, because he laid his hand upon the Jews. 8 Write ye also to the Jews, as it pleaseth you, in the king’s name, and seal it with the king’s ring; for the writing which is written in the king’s name, and sealed with the king’s ring, may no man reverse.

9 Then were the king’s scribes called at that time, in the third month, which is the month Sivan, on the three and twentieth day thereof; and it was written according

observation
Esther didn’t focus on revenge. The greatest trial lay ahead and involved the sanctity of a kings decree. For a king to reverse his own decree is a political slippery slope. She submits all that she is and demonstrates forgiveness, grace and mercy to her king (and husband) in the reframing of “decrees” to “letters devised by Haman.” She honored her king by not placing her need above his honor. For a King is still a man and decrees are made with the declaration “may no man reverse.” With the tragic present reality of her people, Esther created a bridge for her King and even more so for her husband (that made reversing his own decrees a possibility.) Because they were “devised” to fool the king, himself and destroy Jews and with them his Queen.
application
Words have power. We all use them but do we really? Do we use them to create a bridge. How is it so that one silent momentary prayer asking for God to speak through me could actually raise a bridge allowing such a massive ship to pass? God says, I am his daughter. A princess and heir to heaven. I am an Esther in the making.
prayer
Heavenly Father, Thank you for loving me, your Kathleen, as I am and wanting the best for me in all situations. For placing this desire on my heart to present myself to you; to be renewed; to be shaped by your word. I confess thousands of conversations throughout my life in blind regard for the power you embed into each word. My disregard felled bridges. Hurt people I do not even know. I am sorry for how I stood in the way of your forgiveness, grace and mercy finding its way into the world through words. Abba Daddy, Please forgive me and comfort them. I adore you. I am grateful for this new day you have given me to surrender as Queen Esther did before you… for a greater purpose. I lay down at the foot of the cross anything not of you. I pick up my cross and embrace the blessing of your Holy Spirit sealed within me to give me your words throughout the day and night. Thank you that I may co-join in your great purposes for this day. Thank you for the Encore Group with Grace Community and the Dinner Cruise, Saturday evening- for leading me onto the deck just as the great bridge raised overhead. I will remember you are all about raising bridges. I delight in you, Abba. Amen in Jesus’s Name
